To the Source - Rhayader · Elan Valley · Builth Wells

If you’re the type who feels most alive with a rucksack on your back and the wind in your hair, then this stretch of Mid Wales is calling!  Heading to the source of the River Wye means swapping Wi-Fi for wildflowers and emails for eagle calls.

Just north of Rhayader, the Wye is still young, tumbling through upland farms and wooded gorges, long before it matures into the wide, meandering river known further downstream. It’s rugged, remote, and entirely worth it.

Rhayader, often called the gateway to the Elan Valley, is a picturesque market town surrounded by rolling hills. It's a haven for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. Just beyond lies the Elan Valley itself, an atmospheric landscape of Victorian dams, mirror-like reservoirs, and endless walking routes. Come nightfall, the skies here dazzle and is officially one of the best stargazing spots in Wales.

A little to the south lies Builth Wells, a charming riverside town steeped in history. Once a stronghold of medieval princes, and stories of the battles fought still linger. Today it's a thriving hub for those exploring the Brecon Beacons, Elan Valley or to visit the Royal Welsh Agricultural show - one of the largest events of it's kind, bringing together rural life, livestock, food and culture in a four day celebration each summer.
