Where the Wye Wanders Deepest: Ross-on-Wye · Chepstow

The final stretch of the river, from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow, where the Wye twists through steep-sided valleys, ancient woodland and some of the most stunning scenery in the region.  If you’re here to wander, and take in the stunning views, you’re in exactly the right place.

There's plenty to do and explore - climb the rock at Symonds Yat for one of the most iconic views in the Wye Valley. Take a hand pulled ferry across the Wye, try your hand at kayaking or paddle boarding or just spend a lazy afternoon watching the world float by from one of the pubs or tea rooms tucked along the banks. Explore the charming villages or hike up to Devils Pulpit or Eagles Nest for panoramic views across the river.

It’s here that William Wordsworth once walked and wrote, and today you can follow in his footsteps along the Wordsworth Walk, a contemporary take on the area's romantic roots. As you wander beneath the tree canopy and through crumbling ruins, you arrive at the beautiful Tintern Abbey, a true jewel nestled deep in the valley.

Just a little further on in Monmouth, a handsome market town full of independent shops, historic buildings and riverside charm. It's also the gateway to The Forest of Dean, a vast, ancient woodland that's perfect of cycling, walking, wildlife spotting or even swinging through the trees at a local adventure park.

With Chepstow Castle standing guard at the river's end and easy road access through, this stretch is perfect for a weekend break or a longer, slower paced escape. Castles, pretty towns, stunning viewpoints and cosy pubs all await you here - a perfect final chapter for your Wye Valley adventure!
