Canoeing River Wye: From Glasbury to Hay & Beyond

The River Wye offers one of the most peaceful and picturesque canoeing routes - Ideal for families, beginners and experienced paddlers. It’s a gentle way to explore nature at your own pace. Whether you launch from Glasbury or Hay-on-Wye, you will find yourself gliding downstream - admiring the wildlife, secluded shingle beaches and countryside views.

Starting Point: Glasbury or Hay-on-Wye
Glasbury is a popular canoe launch site with convenient free parking, a riverside café and toilets - making it a stress-free place to begin your journey. Hay has plenty of parking, cafes, restaurants and shops, all within easy walking distance. Both offer easy river access launch points. Canoe and kayak hire is available for guided or self-led trips. Trip Options:
Half-day trip (5.5 miles): Glasbury to Hay/Hay to Whitney

Full-day trip (11 miles): Glasbury to Whitney

It’s a perfect stretch for families and beginners, with half days trips taking 2-3 hours. It’s a gentle flow in the summer months with easy rapids at the warren, river beaches, and plenty of wildlife - look out for kingfishers, herons, otters, red kites and more!

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you could easily make an entire day of it and paddle 11 miles, Glasbury to Whitney. Or pack your camping gear and take off for a few days! If camping isn't your thing - there's plenty of other options, take a look at our B&B’s or riverside cottages.

Safety & Planning Tips:

  • Book early in summer. If the sun is shining, you’re guaranteed everyone wants to take to the water! The campsites at Whitney and Bycross often fill up early.
  • What to wear: Quick-dry clothes, layers, river shoes, and a dry bag (barrels are usually provided)
  • What to bring: Dry bag, snacks, water, sunscreen
  • Weight & age limits: Children under 5 (or under 25 kg) may not be permitted. A full price ticket is usually issued from age 13+. Most companies also normally require an adult to child ratio of 1:1 with a minimum of 2 adults per group.
  • Safety briefing: All operators provide instructions and buoyancy aids before departure. Guided trips are generally available if preferred.
